The Great New Zealand Shake Out

At 9.15am on Thursday 15th October, the children at May Road School took part in the NZ Shake Out to practise what to do during an earthquake.  Here are some of the children from Room 11 who remembered to DROP, COVER, HOLD.  Well done!

Science with Sally

We had such a fun and informative science session with Sally, from Watercare, today! Sally had organised several water science experiences. Have a look...

Molecules in a solid state are close to each other and do not move around much.

Molecules in a liquid state are a bit further apart and move around more...

...and molecules in a gas state are far apart and move around a lot!

Feeling the effect of water in the gas state (steam).

Exploring magnification...

...and refraction (when light rays are bent). Wow!

Learning about surface tension.

Art
We like learning about art in Room 11.  In term 1, we were developing our observation skills and pencil control - that is - how to use a pencil in art.  We learnt that we need to look, look, look before we draw what we see. We also learnt about different pencil lines such as whisper, talking, shouting and tornado lines! Then we applied our knowledge to draw some objects and then our self portraits. Mrs. Swain was impressed!

Working hard!

Swimming with Room 11, 2015

Welcome to Room 11's blog, 2015.
We were very fortunate earlier in the year to have swimming coaches work with the children at May Road School.  Junior and middle school children began to develop some important water safety and swimming skills: putting their faces in or under the water, floating, rotating while floating and using a flotation device (noodle or kickboard) to move through the water.  Have a look at the hard working kids of Room 11!
