We are learning about plants and gardening. On Monday, Room 2 planted the seedlings we had sowed, with our buddy class Room 14 and with Brian.

Art
Last Friday, we made paper flowers to give to our mother for Mother's Day.
We:
1. Layered different coloured pieces of tissue paper
2. Folded the paper like a fan
3. Tied the paper in the middle with a pipe cleaner
4. Gently prised apart the layers of paper
5. Gently shaped the flower.
It was challenging in parts for nearly everyone, but we persevered and the children were so proud of their beautiful craft work. Well done Room 2!

Seeds and Soil
Next term, May Road School children will be planting seedlings in our shared, Rainbow Garden. To get the students started, our caretaker Brian, who is very knowledgeable about plants, brought in 4 different kinds of seeds for the children in Room 2 to sow. Children sowed carrot, broccoli, silverbeet and leek seeds. The seeds will be put in a hot water closet over the holidays to germinate and should be ready for planting next term. How exciting!

EOTC Week
This week is our EOTC (Education Outside The Classroom) week. What a start we have had! We began by painting around some stormwater drains to remind everyone at our school that whatever enters these drains, ends up in the sea. We want to keep our seas healthy and clean - Healthy Seas, Healthy People (the theme of this year's seaweek).

Science in Room 2
Room 2 loves learning about science! This term, we are using our observation and thinking skills to find about our natural and living environment. We have a classroom swan plant and a monarch caterpillar, which has turned into a pupa (or chrysalis). We also have a classroom kumara and we are observing how it has changed over the past 2 weeks. Art - W.A.L.T colour in
This term, each class at May Road School has a swan plant and monarch caterpillars. We're observing what happens to the caterpillars and the plant. Why? Because we see them outside in our gardens and we want to find out more about them both.
So, for our assembly with our big buddy class Room 14, we thought we'd do something around The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We coloured in pictures to show at assembly while children from Room 14 read the story. We practised colouring in by using shorter, controlled lines in one direction. This helped to create tidy, coloured pictures.
